A slow calm start in a home with no children or dogs..would do it for them and you will have buddies for life.

Let's get them a home for Christmas!

Winter Solstice

kduncan | December 22, 2009

Today it is time to turn things around..longer days, happy surprises. We are so grateful for the support and wonderful messages we have been receiving all this week. Thank you all.

Karen and all of us here at VOKRA!

We are on Ch. 9 tonight at 11 30 news

kduncan | December 19, 2009

Well what a day.. a call from CTV that they wanted to do an interview about our situation. Fast locating of foster who was home and had kittens and wasn't going to panic. Run through the shower and over there.

We were on the 6 o'clock news and will be on again at 11:30 tonight, Channel 9. We are so grateful for the coverage and support we have been getting this past week...and were just saying how much better and less stressed we feel compared to just a few days ago.

You can read the story online and view the news clip here.

Our calendars are flying out of all the listed stores and clinics..and people are sending donations. There is a lot to do but we are on the track and will keep looking for answers for our money problems. It has been really so wonderful to hear from so many people who realize what we are doing.

We now have media pages as part of our News section.....and we are going to be finally hooked up to a new company so that people can sign to do monthly donations. IATS does not do that service unfortunately. Its all a learning curve...

Thank you all !!!! VOKRA

VOKRA issued a press release today, 16 December 2009, to local and national media. So far, we have had a great response from several sources, including:

The Surrey Leader: www.bclocalnews.com/surrey_area/surreyleader/lifestyles/79352397.html

News 1130: www.news1130.com/news/local/more.jsp?content=20091216_123226_8872

Thank you, Surrey Leader and News 1130!

After interviews and photos this morning and early afternoon, we're anticipating additional coverage in the Province and Metro News.

A huge thank you to everyone who has helped us so far, by spreading the word and by donating to us. Large and small, whatever people are able to spare during these tough financial times, we are truly grateful! You help us to continue caring for cats like this little one below, who was born missing part of his leg, but is now adopted and doing great.

You can view a copy of the press release in our Media section. Please feel free to send this information out to any individuals or groups you think would be interested.

Adoptions and available kitties.

kduncan | December 13, 2009

Soooooo .. we have had lots of adoptions in last few days. Things are still quite confused but if you have an ap in and haven't heard from us, please look through the available ones in gallery and send in a note to : rescue@vokra.ca

Let us know if still looking and which ones that are still up on the gallery site you are interested in..

Please do not send in an ap if you are going to wait til after xmas ..or later in year. I need to get the apps list down so it is easier to sort through. Christmas is not a good time to bring a new pet in if there are children in the home..

Thanks to all who got out to our Petsmart adoption centres today and yesterday. We have one more weekend coming up on this fundraising event.. so maybe see you next week.

Second Weekend for Photos with Santa

dsheldon | December 11, 2009

It’s the second weekend for our Santa Pictures for Pets at our two Petsmart locations.

Our volunteers will be at:

Petsmart in North Vancouver, 1325 Main Street

Petsmart in Vancouver, 2860 Bentall Street, on Grandview Highway (E.12th Ave.). Watch for the sign and turn left before Boundary.

We have done this for a few years and it is always a lot of fun with an endless line of pups, cats, hamsters, ferrets, etc. that come to sit with Santa for a picture, which is printed out right there and put in a frame for you to take home.

Cost for each picture in frame is under $10, with proceeds going to our rescue. We will have our 2010 calendars available as well.

The remaining dates for pictures are:

Dec 12th and 13th

Dec 19th and 20th

We're at both locations 11 to 4:00 each day.

VOKRA Urgently Needs Your Help

dsheldon | December 10, 2009

After 9 years of rescue work, VOKRA is faced with the very real possibility of having to close its doors to new cats until further notice.

Two very big, entirely unanticipated rescues drained us of $50,000+ this year. Add to that the global economic downturn, with the number of dumped cats on the rise, and we are in dire financial straits.

To date this year, we have rescued over 1000 kittens and adult cats. This includes feral cats in our TNR program who were humanely trapped, spayed/neutered, and released, to reduce the number of kittens born on the streets into starvation, disease, predation, and other miseries.

If VOKRA cannot keep on going, then the rescues and TNR stop. It’s unfortunately that simple.

We realize that most people are experiencing financial issues. But if you can spare $5 or $10, and can ask your family and friends to do the same, VOKRA may be able to get through this situation.

We have our VOKRA fundraising calendar available. And we’ve also started a Sponsor VOKRA Kittens and Cats program. Both of these are great, inexpensive gift ideas for the holidays.

How you can help:

1. Donate online: www.orphankittenrescue.com/donate/

2. Donate by cheque made out to VOKRA and mailed to:

PO Box 74571

2768 West Broadway

Vancouver, BC

V6K 4P4

3. Purchase calendars online or in stores: www.orphankittenrescue.com/2010_calendar/

4. Become a VOKRA Sponsor: www.orphankittenrescue.com/sponsor_vokra_cats

We are a registered charity and issue tax receipts for donations of $20 and over.

Thank you for reading. We hope that by publicizing the reality of our situation, we'll find that caring people come forward so that VOKRA can continue to help the cats.
