Our biggest needs right now....

kduncan | September 27, 2010

As you have seen over the past while..we are working at every possible angle to find ways of raising money. Right now our biggest need is for foster homes for adult cats esp..and for

We have had to turn down all new requests for help in Surrey, put off any large operations for all our cats and kittens, and direct people with found cats to other groups.

I think what people don't understand is ..yes we have an adoption covers first shot and check up , fix and tattoo for the adopter. What also goes out while they are with us is: high guality food to get them strong and healthy and growing well, worming treatments, flea treatments, care if they have something go wrong with their health. Kittens are very delicate and manage to have all kinds of health issues as they are getting ready for adoption . Not to mention the ones like Peek..who came in with one eye almost out and had to have an emergency operation. The adoption fee in no way pays for all we spend on average for each cat or kitten. As the kittens reach 5 months, they go in for their fix...hundreds all around the same time have their operations and are adding to the bills. Vets give us a society rate but we still have to pay a lot out ..

If everyone we have ever helped and everyone that wants to see us continuing to help the hundreds who come to us each year ..could send in $10 or $20 a month it would make so much difference..

I still have vets waiting to be paid..A new contact to do with food and litter will be making a huge difference in the amount going out for those two things in the coming years. Right now though , i am desperate to get in more to keep paying the vet bills.

We have used up our fundraiser money.. now praying seems like a good idea..

Anyone with any info on grants we can add to list we are applying to, or foundations who will support or ??? please send in. And hey receipts are valuable for people with masses of money or businesses..!

Her stitches are out now and is doing great.

Walk for the Kitties total!

dsheldon | September 26, 2010

From the bottom of our cat-loving hearts, we'd like to thank everyone who made our first annual VOKRA "Walk for the Kitties" the great success we were hoping it would be. With the generosity of people in our community, volunteers, and sponsors, we raised more than $25,200!!! The event was planned and organized in a very short time, and our initial goal was $10,000, so we are so incredibly grateful!! THANK YOU!! Just wait until next year... The planning starts now!!

All the money we raised from the Walk has been spent on our vet bills. All of the vets we use have been so kind to us, and we would like to thank all of them for their patience as we work towards paying off all that is owed.

This year has been just as busy as last year, and we are still getting so many moms and kittens. Many of the moms this year came in scared and pregnant off the street. They had been either lost or dumped and at five months became pregnant. Please take the time to remind your friends and family (and strangers!) to spay and neuter their cats by five months.

Thank you again for your support!

VOKRA kittens on Ellen DeGeneres!

dsheldon | September 25, 2010

One of our fosters recently posted a YouTube video of two of our kittens from a year ago. One kitty was giving her brother a "massage". The video went viral with over 250,000 views, ending up on a number of blogs and websites, and even made it onto The Ellen DeGeneres Show on September 22 during Cat Week. Ellen comically ad libbed during the video!

It's quite funny ... check it out at

You too can adopt a famous kitty! Visit our gallery to see all our kittens and adult cats waiting for a forever home.

Another quick fundraiser!

kduncan | September 24, 2010

Saturday, September 25th, we will be set up outside the new Tisol for their opening of the new store in Burnaby. It is at Market Crossing Mall on Marine Way at Byrne Road.

We are very happy to be involved and to support Tisol stores as they have stuck to being a source of great quality foods/supplies, with no animal sales. They have given us lots of help over the years and are one of the stores we highly recommend for all things kitty!

We will have our new VOKRA t-shirts and bracelets for sale as well as lots of info .. We are in charge of the hotdog BBQ, veggie dogs too with loads of cooked onions... and drinks etc... All proceeds from our sales go to the support and care of our cats and kittens.

Kensington Foundation will be there also...They do a tremendous amount of fundraising to help many of the rescue groups.

Lots of parking...we are under tents.

Should be a great day...and hey they said it would be sunny....i swear they did! Come on out for lunch.

A different kind of cat walk

Vancouver – Cats (and their owners) will be strutting their stuff on Saturday, September 11 for the first annual Walk for the Kitties, a fundraiser supporting the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Organization (VOKRA).

VOKRA is a no-kill, non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue of cats in the Lower Mainland. In 2009, more than 1,400 abandoned kittens and adult cats were saved from starvation, disease, and misery.

“It’s heartbreaking that these are all homeless or unwanted cats,” says Karen Duncan, VOKRA president. “We provide safe homes and high-quality care for the majority of these cats before they are adopted out. For the feral cats, we have a trap-neuter-return program.”

Run entirely by volunteers, VOKRA relies on adoption fees and donations to pay for food, litter, and medical costs for over a thousand cats each year. Numbers nearly doubled in 2009, and in 2010 VOKRA is just as busy. Expenses average over $25,000 per month.

“We’ve had just as many cats come through our door this year as last year, and we’re expecting more,” continues Duncan. “The reality is that we’re still paying our vet costs from last year, so the Walk for the Kitties fundraiser is really important for us to continue the work we do."

Duncan recalls one of the first kittens rescued by VOKRA many years ago. Bunny fought all the odds when she was young—seizures, not being able to walk or see, on the verge of not making it. Through treatment, care, and lots of love, Bunny survived and is now a healthy 9-year-old cat who was adopted by Duncan herself.

”Looking at Bunny each day reminds me why we put our heart and soul into this rescue,” says Duncan. “So many kittens and cats would not have happy endings if we had not become involved in their lives. We hope our generous supporters and people everywhere will come out for the walk. Bring a friend, or four!”

The 5km Walk for the Kitties starts at the Jericho Sailing Centre in Kitsilano. The Family Fun Fair, which goes until 5pm, begins after the walk and includes games, contests, face painting, raffles, food, and music.

Join VOKRA at the Walk for the Kitties or donate online at, and help one more kitten have a safe and happy life!

Date: Saturday, September 11

Time: 10 am to 5 pm (Walk Registration at 9 am)

Location: Jericho Sailing Centre, 1300 Discovery St in Kitsilano

Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association (VOKRA) is a no-kill, non-profit, registered charity dedicated to the rescue of cats in the Lower Mainland. VOKRA has grown rapidly since its founding in 2000, from rescuing approximately 150 kittens and adult cats per year to more than 1,420 in 2009. VOKRA has become a well-known and respected organization in the animal rescue and welfare community. For more information, visit
